Yolanda López: Portrait of the Artist

January 6-May 18, 2024

Yolanda López: Portrait of the Artist brings together fifty works by one of the most iconic artists to emerge from the Chicanx movement: Yolanda M. López (1942-2021). Curated by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, this exhibition begins in 1975, when López entered graduate school at the University of California, San Diego, and continues into the 1980s when the artist created her celebrated Guadalupe series. Throughout this period in López’s life, she produced a breakthrough corpus of paintings, drawings, collages, and photographs that investigate and reimagine representations of women, becoming a reference of self-determination and female empowerment within Chicanx culture and society at large. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Yolanda López, 1942-2021.
