Michael Vasquez is a local Fresno artist and illustrator who creates digital illustrations inspired by Mesoamerican and Native American cultures. His work represents the gods and mythology, animals, and symbols from those traditions. His goal is to educate others about these rich traditions and offer functional artwork that allows people to express and represent themselves.
Tonalli
Tonalli is a Nahuatl word that roughly translates to “day” or “day sign”, but the word was also used to reference the frontal area of the skull and the warmth of the sun. It is said that when a child was in utero, the old Gods, Ometecuhtli and Omecihuatl would “breathe” a tonalli into that child by igniting a fire in the child chest through a fire drilling process. This tonalli was a combination of the individual’s soul and the gods based on the birthday of that individual. The day your birthday falls on based on a special 260 ceremonial calendar; determines your name, your life’s fortune, and character. Each day and god comes with positive and negative qualities, but each individual had the ability to choose how they wanted to use their tonalli; whether with respect and admiration through prayer, mediation, and rituals or by ignoring them all together.
The pieces of artwork here are a small collection of some of those gods and
symbols related to that sacred calendar. My hope is that you take the time to
learn about some of these gods and potentially use them to start or further
enhance your spiritual journey.

Tonalli
Tonalli es una palabra náhuatl que se traduce aproximadamente como “día” o
“signo del día”, pero también se utilizaba para referirse a la zona frontal del
cráneo y al calor del sol. Se dice que cuando un niño estaba en el útero, los
antiguos dioses, Ometecuhtli y Omecihuatl “insuflaban” un tonalli en ese niño
encendiendo un fuego en el pecho del niño a través de un proceso de perforación
de fuego. Este tonalli era una combinación del alma del individuo y los dioses
basados en el cumpleaños de ese individuo. El día de tu cumpleaños, basado en
un calendario ceremonial 260 especial, determina tu nombre, la fortuna de tu
vida y tu carácter. Cada día y cada dios vienen acompañados de cualidades
positivas y negativas, pero cada individuo tenía la capacidad de elegir cómo
quería utilizar su tonalli; si con respeto y admiración a través de la oración, la
mediación y los rituales o ignorándolos por completo.

esos dioses y símbolos relacionados con ese calendario sagrado. Espero que te
