Adam/n Perez is an independent director and photographer born and raised in California’s rural Central Valley. His work spans genres and mediums–– all rooted in intimate storytelling.
The Emerson Collective, The Center for Cultural Power, The California Arts Council, and the Academy of Arts and Sciences have supported his work about farmworker communities.
He’s a frequent contributor to The New York Times and recently worked on a national campaign with the ACLU, documenting the stories of asylum seekers. He graduated with honors from Columbia Journalism School and the University of Southern California, where he’s also worked as an adjunct professor. He’s a member of Diversify Photo and The National Associate of Hispanic Journalists.
Tierra Mia
For more than 20 years, I’ve been documenting the Central Valley, which grows one-fourth of the U.S.’s food. My motivation is to create stories that reveal the wisdom and beauty of the region from an insider’s perspective.My work is founded on deep relationships with a network of trusted messengers, including community leaders, organizers, cultural bearers, and educators. This network is essential in understanding the needs of the community and amplifying the work. The Central Valley is considered a news desert; the few, existing newspapers have been overstretched and hollowed out. My visual work aims to fill in this divide by creating a living archive and fostering new storytellers.

Su obra abarca diversos géneros y medios, todos ellos basados en la narración de historias íntimas. El Emerson Collective, el Center for Cultural Power, el California Arts Council y la Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias han apoyado su trabajo sobre las comunidades de trabajadores agrícolas.

Mi motivación es crear historias que revelen la sabiduría y la belleza de la región desde la perspectiva de alguien de dentro. Mi trabajo se basa en profundas relaciones con una red de mensajeros de confianza, como líderes comunitarios, organizadores, portadores culturales y educadores. Esta red es esencial para comprender las necesidades de la comunidad y amplificar el trabajo. El Valle Central está considerado un desierto informativo; los pocos periódicos existentes se han visto desbordados y vaciados. Mi trabajo visual pretende llenar este vacío creando un archivo vivo y fomentando nuevos narradores.
