In this lesson plan, students begin with an interactive, bilingual (Spanish and English) read-a-loud of Las magníficas plantitas bailadoras de mamá/ Mamá’s Magnificent Dancing Plantitas by Jesús Trejo. Through this heartwarming, funny cuento, kids will learn the names of different houseplants while discovering the joy and responsibility that come with caring for them.
Following the storytime, students will learn about the plant life cycle (seed, seedling, adult plant) while exploring still-life drawing and continuous-line drawing techniques. Using live plant models from each stage of the life cycle as inspiration, students will practice observation and drawing. The lesson concludes with an artists’ show and tell.
