Artist Bio
Isai Soto (he/him) is a Chicano artist from Fallbrook, California. After receiving a BA in Anthropology from Columbia University, he pursued a career in the arts informed by his studies in autoethnography. In New York, he grew fascinated by rave flyers which influenced his style as a graphic designer and printmaker. He displays the friction between his ethnic heritage and American nationality as it was presented in his upbringing, at times at odds and at times harmonious, via posterwork and costumes. He has exhibited at Manhattan Graphics Center, the Brooklyn Public Library, Macaulay Honors College, and has performed at various nightclubs in drag. He works from his home in Oakland, California.
The San Ysidro Plan
The San Ysidro Plan/El Plan de San Ysidro, a 45-foot fabric mural installed in the Arte Américas Featured Artist gallery, commemorates the labor history of the Central Valley, a recurring site of artist Isai’s upbringing. With relatives working in the nearby almond fields and grapevines, he draws on the 1965 Delano Grape Strike, emphasizing the power of farmworkers’—rather than a single leader’s—ability to achieve unionization. The title references El Plan de San Luis Potosí, a political manifesto that influenced the 1910 Mexican Revolution, of which the opening line is inscribed across the mural. The San Ysidro Plan/El Plan de San Ysidro mirrors the fragmented conditions of the agricultural workforce through a portrayal of wandering luchadores, and calls for a reunified labor front.
Outdoors, Neighborhood Watch is installed on the exterior of Arte Américas, standing as a sentinel for the space.

Isai Soto (él) es un artista chicano de Fallbrook, California. Tras licenciarse en Antropología por la Universidad de Columbia, siguió una carrera en el mundo de las artes inspirándose en sus estudios de autoetnografía. En Nueva York, quedó fascinado por los carteles de raves, lo que influyó en su estilo como diseñador gráfico y grabador. A través de carteles y vestuario, muestra la tensión entre su herencia étnica y la nacionalidad estadounidense tal y como se le presentó durante su infancia, a veces en conflicto y otras en armonía. Ha expuesto en el Manhattan Graphics Center, la Biblioteca Pública de Brooklyn y el Macaulay Honors College, y ha actuado en diversos clubes nocturnos caracterizado como drag queen. Trabaja desde su casa en Oakland, California.
El Plan de San Ysidro
The San Ysidro Plan/El Plan de San Ysidro, un mural de tela de 14 metros instalado en la Galería de Artistas Invitados de Arte Américas, conmemora la historia laboral del Valle Central, un lugar recurrente en la infancia del artista Isai. Con familiares que trabajaban en los campos de almendra y las viñas cercanas, se inspira en la huelga de la uva de Delano de 1965, haciendo hincapié en el poder de los trabajadores agrícolas —más que en el de un único líder— para lograr la sindicalización. El título hace referencia al Plan de San Luis Potosí, un manifiesto político que influyó en la Revolución Mexicana de 1910, cuya primera línea aparece inscrita en el mural. The San Ysidro Plan/El Plan de San Ysidro refleja las condiciones fragmentadas de la mano de obra agrícola a través de una representación de luchadores errantes, y hace un llamamiento a un frente laboral reunificado.
